The Official Charts Company revealed the news following the single’s release on Friday September 8. The track is the lead single from Sam’s forthcoming album, which is currently untitled.
It follows the singer’s previous string of number one singles, which include La La La (with Naughty Boy), Money On My Mind, Stay With Me, Lay Me Down and Writing’s On The Wall.
Too Good at Goodbyes is also the sixth song to debut at number one in the charts in 2017.
The others are Ed Sheeran’s Shape Of You, Harry Styles’ Sign of The Times, DJ Khaled’s I’m The One, Artists for Grenfell’s Bridge Over Troubled Water and Taylor Swift’s Look What You Made Me Do.
It’s bright news for the London-based musician, who revealed in an interview with Attitude magazine recently that he nearly quit music over heartbreak.
‘There was a period, when making the record, that I was in a really bad place,’ he told Sir Elton John who interviewed him.
‘I got dumped, which wasn’t very nice. Writing music about that kind of thing is normally like therapy for me, but when I got dumped this time round I just couldn’t write for about two months’.
