Mourinho maintains that Pogba did not have any issues and claims he wanted more ‘simplicity’ in his midfield by bringing on Michael Carrick. Asked if Pogba was injured, Mourinho told Sky Sports: ‘No. No problems.’ And when asked why Pogba was brought off early, the United boss said: ‘I wanted a better way to come out in the first phase against a team that was defending in a very compact block.
‘I was trying that with the simplicity of Michael Carrick because he tries to make everything simple. ‘And bring Alexis [Sanchez] close to [Romelu] Lukaku, where he could be a second striker to try to win the game. ‘I was unlucky because they scored in the seconds before that, and then I’m going to face a different Newcastle, a Newcastle that in that moment the only think is to defend.’
