Jose Mourinho axed Paul Pogba for United’s 2-0 win over Huddersfield after the pair exchanged heated words during the clash against Tottenham Hotspur – where Pogba was ultimately replaced – and trusted academy graduate Scott McTominay to take his place in midfield.

And he claimed that Pogba’s work ethic has been up to his usual high standards despite being left out of the United XI. ‘Paul had a very professional behaviour,’ he said ahead of the trip to Newcastle. ‘This week was not different to what Paul is every week.

‘He works well, he’s a good professional, he likes to train. ‘I’ve never had a single problem with him. He likes to train.’
